Review & Description

This book breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers thats never been done beforeit cuts through the bull and shows you exactly how to do it. Its not a bunch of theory; it doesnt challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. Instead, it does something that virtually no other Elements book has ever doneit tells you flat-out which settings to use, when to use them, and why.

If youre looking for one of those tell-me-everything-about-the-Unsharp-Mask-filter books, this isnt it. You can grab any other Elements book on the shelf, because they all do that. Instead, this book gives you the inside tips and tricks of the trade for organizing, correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and printing your photos like a pro. Youll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques areonce you know the secrets.

LEARN HOW THE PROS DO IT
Each year we train thousands of digital photographers and, almost without exception, they have the same questions and face the same problemthats exactly what we cover in this book. Youll learn:

  • The real secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
  • How to color correct any photo with out breaking a sweat (youll be amazed at how they do it!)
  • How to use Camera Raw for processing not only RAW photos, but JPEGs and TIFFs, too! (And youll learn why so many pros like it bestbecause its faster and easier)
  • The sharpening techniques the pros really use (theres an entire chapter just on this!)
  • How to deal with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
  • The most requested photographic special effects, and much more!
THE BOOKS SECRET WEAPON
Although Elements 9 offers some digital photography features that Photoshop CS5 doesnt offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS5 has that Elements 9 still doesnt have (things like paths, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, youll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements. Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesnt waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, set your exposure, etc., and theres no talk about which camera or printer to buy. Its all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover, in the only book of its kind!

Review & Description

In 2008, Adobe Photoshop pro and best-selling author Matt Kloskowski broke new ground teaching Photoshop by focusing on the one thing that makes Photoshop the amazing (and sometimes difficult to understand) program it is: layers. Now, Matt returns with a major update that covers layers in Photoshop CS5 in the same concise, easy to understand way thats made him so well known in the field of Photoshop training.

When asked about the original version of this book, Matt said, "I wanted it to be the Photoshop book that I wish was around when I was first learning." This update improves upon that concept. Within these pages, youll learn about:

  • Working with and managing multiple layers in Photoshop CS5
  • Building multiple-layer images
  • Blending layers together
  • Layer masking and just how easy it is
  • Which of the 25+ layer blend modes you really need to know (there are just a few)
  • Using layers to enhance and retouch your photos
  • All of the tips and tricks that make using layers a breeze
  • Plus, a new chapter on advanced layer techniques and compositing to help take your work to the next level
If you want to fully understand layers in Photoshop CS5, this book is the one youve been waiting for! Read more

Review & Description

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was a pioneer of landscape photography, whose imagery-especially his iconic views of the American National Parks--is widely published and instantly recognizable. While he is undoubtedly one of the best-loved and best-known visionaries of American art, photographers also recognize him as a pioneer of technique, a theoretician, and as one of the great teachers of the craft of photography.

His zone system has been widely adapted, but Adams unique imagery also relied on his determination and application at every stage of the photographic process; he spent years in his darkroom, as well as out in the open air. For decades, this kind of attention to detail required the kind of equipment, time, and facilities that were out of the reach of most photographers--but now, in the digital age, technology has finally made his techniques accessible.

This book will show you what can be learned from Adams working process, and how these lessons can be applied today. The craft of Adams photography is discussed, and the ZONE SYSTEM is related to the digital age. Sections on light, composition, mood, and the darkroom all show what can be achieved today using and understanding his thinking. Michael Frye's own photography provides many stunning examples of the results that can be achieved and, as one of Adams' natural successors in the field, he is well placed to analyze the inspirational shots which open each chapter.

* Demystifies the art behind the iconic shots * Contains a number of breathtaking works by Ansel Adams and other landscape masters such as Edward Weston and Elliot Porter * Written by one of the most reputable fine landscape photographers, who (like Ansel Adams) uses Yosemite National Park most frequently as his subject * Breaks the zone systems (famous to Adams) down in a way that digital photographers can use
